Probably no one's even reading this anymore, but just in case...

Next week, I'm planning to back up this journal over at DW, but that will be private, so if there are any fics, etc., you might want to keep from here, save them now. I plan to delete it after everything's saved over there.

So I think I'm kind of...done with this journal. At least for now. I'm just not feeling it much these days. Nothing in particular, wank or anything, just...eh. Not feeling it, fannishly; further, I'm looking at a couple of career options, after graduation, that require a lot more separation between my on- and off-line lives than I've had.

I haven't left fandom by any means -- I'm still following things, and have been all the time I've been delinquent in posting. Nor am I deleting this journal -- I haven't backed it up, for one thing -- but I don't know if/when I'll be using it much again.

(Also: Live Free Or Die Hard = AWESOME. Just some parting words until I see y'all again.)

Checking in.

Hi! So. It's been...quite awhile, actually.

I'm okay. I'm just not feeling very fannish at the moment, and trying to compartmentalize more, and separate fannish from personal and whatnot.

Long story short, the past month=craziness. My brother got sick again and had to be hospitalized -- this happened while my parents were in Italy, leaving me in charge, and coincided with finals week. Then I was out of the country traveling for a couple of weeks. Now I'm back, and working, and taking a summer class to fill a gen ed requirement.

So, yeah, hi! I'm not dead. I'm not even bad. I'm just not here much, either.

\o/

Ficlet: Secrets

FIclet from the zombiepocalypse. BtVS/SPN; Buffy Summers/John Winchester implied; PG; the prompt was "can we talk about my Daddy Issues some other time?"

"You had this the whole time?" he asked.

The guilt was, if she was honest, tearing her apart inside. Much as it had been for the past three weeks, as they were driving across the country and she'd had the prophecy stuffed in her pocket. "I made a promise," she said. Because guilt or no, seriously, who was he to get all high and mighty? "And you're not one of my people."

John stared at her a little longer, and then laughed. It wasn't a nice laugh. "Of course," he said. "But Daddy out there is."

"Giles, and yeah, actually, because hi, I've known him for about nine years now and I've known you, what..." She made a show of checking her watch, which was bitchy, but she didn't care. "Oh, that's right, four weeks. I should trust you why?"

She remembered her dream then, and didn't know why until she saw something flash at his collar. "Oh my god," she said, and reached for his shirt.

"Not here," he said, smirking.

"You wish," Buffy snapped, already grabbing the chain. "Oh my god, you had this the whole time?" She could even ignore the flashing of the amulet -- not easy, because god, tacky much? -- because she was so busy glaring at John. "And yet you were getting all high and mighty with me?"

John shrugged, unfastening the chain and handing her the amulet. "You're not one of my people," he said.

They glared at each other. Buffy was kind of aware of how close together they were. And also that she needed to work off some energy, and that he hadn't shaved in a couple of days.

Giles cleared his throat in the doorway, and they both turned to look at him. One look at his eyes and Buffy had to look away, because he looked kind of -- like he knew exactly what was going on. "It sounds," was all Giles said, "as though the two of you have a bit of explaining to do. I'd very much like to hear it."

"Yeah," she said, at the same time that John said the same thing. They looked at each other, and when he smiled, she felt a little better, suddenly.

Maybe this could work.

I am appalled by the lack of zombiefic, people. It's not going to write itself!

In other news, oh Supernatural. I want to like you, I really do. It'd be nice to be involved in an active fandom, and most of my flist is there anyway. And you seem like you'd be right up my 'pretty people smashing stuff and making wisecracks' alley, except for the no female regulars thing. And yet, somehow, nothing. SIGH.

Please make a note in the subject line of the prompt you're using, or at least the fandom, plus the overall rating of the fic(let).

So, I was talked into making a vid. For <s>The Adventures of Sean Bean and His Highway Brides</s> The Hitcher. To "Girlfriend".

I suspect I ought to be way more ashamed of myself than I am.

<s>This is the crap youtube version, because Firefox froze on me in the middle of uploading a slightly better-quality one to imeem. Hopefully I'll have a better one up in a few hours, on the off chance that anyone wants it.</s> This is the imeem one, which is much brighter and more watchable.

<lj-embed id="3" />

Shall have the zombiepocalypse post up shortly, too. YAY ZOMBIES.

"is this the end of Zombie Shakespeare?"

So, I had this idea, and Amy -- and Erica, obliquely -- encouraged it, and really, that's all I need to do something these days.

ANNOUNCING

A weekend fic(let) battle.

So, you guys probably know how these weekend 'thons work. People contribute prompts, I collect the prompts, I post the prompts. On the appointed weekend, we all go crazy and start writing fic for the prompts in the comments. Ficlets, more properly; the length is limited by the maxiumum space alotted for comments (I think about 4300 characters).

The twist here is the central theme, namely that of a zombiepocalypse.

(Zombiepocalypse is, of course, the scientific term for an apocalypse with zombies.)

Because zombie fic is awesome.

I'll be collecting prompts through next Thursday -- that is, the seventeenth of May -- and that weekend will be the 'thon itself. Post as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want. I'll post a master list of prompts on Thursday. Crossovers and RPF, by the way, are totally fine -- I really can't get snippy about that kind of thing when I'm running a zombiepocalypse 'fest, can I? I mean, even if I were inclined to, which I'm not, because both crossovers and RPF are ace.

Prompts should be in the following format: Fandom: Character/Pairing, an element or basic idea for the story ("video camera", "trapped in an ice cream store", etc). The important thing is that all those elements -- fandom, character or pairing you want, basic element you want -- are present, as those will make organizing things a lot easier.

(Oh, and pimping is obviously much appreciated. Just to get a good wide selection of people participating.)

Amy is setting up twicetoldfandom, an incredibly cool idea for a 'thon wherein writers are assigned pieces of art and have to come up with a story revolving around it. Except -- here's the twist -- each piece of art will be assigned to two (at least) writers, the idea being to see how many different stories each picture provokes, and how different writers are inspired in different ways.

At the moment, she's just polling to gauge general interest, but she'll need writers and artists, so if this sounds like something you'd be interested in, go check it out, by all means.

I am rather stressed this weekend, because it's finals time, I've got two papers to write and cumulative exam to study for, and I've just started my period so I'm all hormoney and anxious anyway. On the bright side, I have The Hitcher on DVD, because, yay! Stupid slasher movie with Sean Bean! What's not awesome there? And as soon as I've got at least one of these two papers written, I shall watch it. Probably tomorrow night, because with finals this week, I've got no classes on Monday.

I might get drunk, too. Or I might save that for after exams.

LOL FAIRFAX.

Not that Stephen has a favorite. He made sure to emphasize that he loves all his districts equally. <s>EXCEPT WE'RE SO HIS FAVORITE.</s>

I think as of the census we might not be anymore, though. At any rate, I know that as of the last census Fairfax wasn't the richest county in the nation; the 11th may still be the richest Congressional district.

So, first of all, the chili I made yesterday? I WIN AT CHILI. \o/ God, it was so indescribably delicious, you guys, seriously, especially considering I was just using cheap ingredients bought at the grocery store and whatever I had at home.

For future reference: when browning the meat beforehand, cook it in olive oil, a third cup of rum, and a bunch of spices, whatever ones you like, then let it sit, covered, in the runoff, while you make the rest, and add it last. Also, add about a third a cup of rum and the juice of a lime to the meatless mixture. And again with the whatever spices you want. I'm a big advocate of seasonings. And since my wussy parents were gone, my brother and I could make it as spicy as we wanted.

SO DELICIOUS.

The air pressure seems to have changed, because I woke up with a massive headache and it's cloudy and rain looks to be threatening where yesterday it was bright and sunny. Fucking migraine.

A story which started out as a cracktastic PWP set during a zombiepocalypse is now turning into srs bzns fic. FAIL.

I need an icon overhaul. Also, hm, I seem to recall my paid account expiring this month. I need to check on that and renew it.

I keep re-reading BtVS 8x3. OH MY GOD IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY YOU GUYS. This is exactly what I could've hoped canon would be. Well, no, not exactly; Anya would still be alive if it were, but still.

Less than three weeks until I go to England! :D I need to decide exactly what I'm going to do. I know I'm going out Bath way for at least a few days to see thedivinegoat and family (YAY I GET TO SEE THE KIDS AGAIN!) and there are lots of people in London I want to visit. Basically, if you're in the UK and would like me to visit, comment or email (or AIM, but I'm rarely on that because I fail at life) and we'll work it out. \o/

The novel is largely on hold for finals. While I know this is best for my sanity, I'm also reaching the point where I just want to be done with it. Hmph.

The Queen is in Virginia! This is because we are coming up on the 400th anniversary of Jamestown's founding. I admit I am ridiculously proud of my little colony. Fuck the Pilgrims, man. It's all about Jamestown. It may have been a total deathtrap, but...um...

Give me time, I'll come up with something.

Like, NOW.

ETHAN WAS POKING AROUND IN HER DREAMS. He called her his love. And pet. And hit on her a lot, because that is what Ethan does, he hits on everyone. HOMG NOT ONLY WAS IT NOT SPIKE, IT WAS ETHAN FREAKING RAYNE. Oh my god. The closest we got to its being Spike was Ethan poking into one of her sexy dreams about a threesome with Angel and Spike (which was adorable, by the way, and involved her being Nurse Buffy and them being naked and clinging to her), which she shrugged off as saying it had been a long time since she'd had sex.

Which is to say, she doesn't even freaking care about Spike and Angel anymore, she just wants some sex. In fact, she wants some hot threesome action.

Additionally, ASAFKJDFSKLJDFSAKLJ I SO CALLED AMY'S BOYFRIEND BEING WARREN. \o/

HOMG DAWN ENDED THE BATTLE BY STEPPING ON AMY. Which, btw, glorious little parallel with "Fear Itself", but never mind that, mostly GIANT DAWN STEPPED ON SOMEONE. I love it so, so, so much. So much.

I am, however, horrified that they might be pursuing a Buffy/Xander plotline. Didn't we finish that one, like, eight years ago? God, please, no Buffy/Xander. Just, no. Adorable Slayer Renee! Renee/Xander for the win! Renee, who is dorky and good with the machines and does guard duty and argues with Xander over comics. Yes. Renee/Xander is good. Buffy/Xander is a world of disaster waiting to happen.

This is why I count the comics as canon. Between the Buffy/Ethan subtext and the panel that provided this icon, it is pretty much everything I could possibly want from the series. SO MUCH LOVE OH MY GOD.

And I've made some delicious chili for dinner, which seriously smells like the best thing ever.

"Why don't I hear any sleep screams?"

That meme, because it amuses me. We'll see how much of it I actually get written, because I'm kind of, I don't know, not feeling ficcish at all lately. But it's worth a try! Name three fics you think I will never, ever, ever write. In return, I will attempt to write a snippet of one of them.

Once again, I would like to affirm my love for the DCenters. Which is good, because DC United is giving me very little reason to celebrate so far this season. But never mind that.

Today, they are joining in DC's current Year of Shakespeare program by figuring out who would make a good team. "ST Othello -- Charges headlong on whatever Iago sends him to chase, occasionally acts too quickly for his own good, but that's what you want in a striker." The bench includes Lady Macbeth (who will finish off when starter Macbeth starts to get messy, as he's got an unfortunate habit of doing), and Ulysses, who is "on loan from Ithaca United". SO MUCH LOVE.

The weather is stunningly beautiful and I'm taking my parents to the airport in a couple of hours -- they're off to a wedding in Tuscany. We're not Italian; my rich cousin and his girlfriend just wanted to get married in Tuscany. Then my parents are going to spend a few days in Rome and a few in Florence, so it'll be a nice vacation for them.

I loaned Dad my good camera, and was showing him how to work it. He asked if it advanced automatically, and I thought he was asking about zoom. Mom understood -- he was asking about film -- and started telling him that it was a "magic camera". I also loaned him the 2GB card I got for Christmas, so he ought to bring back some very nice pictures!

Some animal woke me up around three-thirty AM last night, too. I have no idea what it was, but it was kind of creepy. It sounded like screaming. It was only the fact that it would start and then stop again, and that it sounded exactly the same every time, that made me certain it was an animal or bird instead of a person screaming, because it seriously sounded like one. So freaking creepy. It woke my brother up, too, and we've been researching to try and figure out what it might have been. The closest match we've got is a bald eagle, and there are a ton of them around here, but I'm pretty sure they're not nocturnal.

"Shut up, everybody shut up, listen to me."

I'm reading whitehouse.gov and sifting through speech transcripts/proclamations/etc to find quotes for my final Government paper and basically I just need to vent a bit. I feel I should get an extra 10% right there, just for PUTTING UP WITH THAT SHIT, because oh my GOD the amount of lying and hypocrisy and FUCK YOU, BUSH, OKAY, JUST FUCK YOU, STOP TRYING TO BLACKMAIL ME INTO THINKING THAT IF I DISAGREE WITH YOU I AM A BAD AMERICAN WHO RAPES PUPPIES WITH CANCER.

And now I'm seriously starting to cry. I thought the election of 2004 crushed my spirit so hard that I could never get that worked up over politics again, but apparently I was wrong.
We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it.
     Edward R. Murrow
I was born in America. I am an American. I have a lot of problems with it, but it is a stunningly beautiful country with a warm, generous spirit. We are, at our best, like a bunch of big loud puppies that don't quite understand how our different parts work, but HEY LOOK AT THIS AWESOME BALL! COME PLAY CATCH WITH ME! IT'S AWESOME!

That's at our best, of course, and I'm sure you all know how often anyone is at their best.

I don't accept and embrace my Americanness because George W. Bush tells me I should. I do so in spite of George W. Bush.

Show me a "great American", Bush, and I will show you someone who dissented. There is nothing more American than that.

(Except possibly for Die Hard.)

It's getting warm again, which means my music tastes change. Well, kind of. I mean, I listen to whatever I feel like most of the time anyway, but warm weather means my new wakeup method is (along with caffeine, obviously) zooming along with the windows down, ROCKING THE FUCK OUT.

Incidentally, a few days ago, my brother mocked me for all the mullet rock on my iPod, and I came to the somewhat horrifying realization that he and I are, respectively, Sam and Dean Winchester. OH GOOD GOD. He's even got the floppy Sam hair. We're just, you know, a lot less emo.

It's currently warm and sunny and oops, I forgot to pack a pleasure-reading book (probably because I feel guilty even thinking about doing something for fun when it's finals time), but I've got an hour until my next class. Guess there's nothing to do but sit in the sun and play around online. What a tragic shame.

"Ooh, I think this was pizza!"

Hey, I completely forgot I have one of those last.fm things! I finally downloaded the software for this computer, too. So my profile is here, if you want to friend me thar.

I found Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream at 7-11! \o/

I have some srs bzns stuff going on lately, but I honestly don't know how ready I am to talk about it. I don't know, I might keep it private, because it's really...there aren't a lot of things I'm not willing to talk about in public, and most of what I'm not I'm willing to talk about under flock/filter, but this stuff is kind of really, really personal and yeah. Nothing earth-shattering or anything, just...stuff.

I'm also not really feeling all that fannish lately. I am, however, trying to teach myself to do mash-ups, just because I'd like to see if I can, and because iTunes, while on Shuffle, came up with a combination that horrified and fascinated me because it was sheer bad-touch perfection, and I think it's workable. I also have an idea for, of all things, a BSG vid. I don't know either, I just know that "Chemicals Between Us" screams Kara and Leoben at me whenever I hear it.

Besides, it's coming up on finals time, so. My mind is elsewhere. Jen B. and I are getting together to do some work tomorrow -- me to draft and begin writing a paper, her to do a bunch of drawings she needs for an Art final -- so that will be fun.

So yeah. Radio silence is not due to anything sinister, just a combination of factors of, you know. Life. Also I'm really sleepy now, so. Bed!

Hey, so, that thing I asked you guys to send us good vibes for a couple of weeks ago?

It happened.

WE'RE MOVING TO AUSTRALIA!!!!

We're going to Adelaide around January sometime. So we'll get there in the middle of summer. HOMG HOMG!

Mom and I literally screamed when Dad told us. Mom had already told Dad that if it didn't go through this time, she got a free punch, because he keeps getting us excited and then it falls through. He came in and said "Okay, bad news: you don't get to punch me."

HOMG. I just. I wasn't sure I was going to, but hello, how many chances am I going to get to travel to Australia on someone else's dime? AWESOME.

It remains absolutely horrific.

We have, however, got a new couch! It is an absolutely hideous color (at least, it's hideous in our living room, which is bright robins-egg blue), but the blue brings out the brown, and brown + light blue is an okay combination, so. Besides, it's also unbelievably comfortable, and that makes up for a lot.

And I am also suddenly really feeling an urge to write some Buffy/Anya. Which is awesome. Maybe I'll even get around to finally writing that AU S6, where they hook up instead of Spuffy and X/A and it's fun and healthy and sweet.

Cable is out at home. This is horrific, because not only have we no TV, we've also no Internet.

HORRIFIC.

It also completely threw off my morning routine. I ended up leaving incredibly early for school because 'read BBC News/flist/etc' is part of my routine, and my internal clock got screwed up and assumed that since I was no longer reading things online, it must be time to go. I was on campus before I realized that I'd left an hour early. FAIL!

Thankfully that left me with an extra hour to hang out at the JC and read the flist and everything on my laptop. So I'm not in complete withdrawal.

Mom and I went shopping yesterday! \o/ She and Dad are going to my cousin's wedding next week, and it's in a little Tuscan village, so after that they're spending a couple of weeks on holiday around Italy. Anyway, she needed cheap niceish shoes she could wear for the wedding, and a slip, and I tagged along and got an adorable new dress out of the deal.

Good Lord, it's gorgeous out today. It has been all weekend and thankfully it's continuing today. I'm going to have to wax my legs later, so that I can start wearing the shorter skirts in my collection -- today I'm wearing the long lightweight flowered one.

I feel not at all bad about my decision to skip my first class and lay around with the windows open.

And yesterday I went up for an extra-credit thing one of my professors was doing. This was the class where the professor lost my exam, and between this and the extra-credit paper I picked up in that class, I am now in the clear. \o/ God, that's such a load off my chest. And I'm all registered for next semester, and am taking all Astronomy and History classes, which, awesome.

I also have Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature, which is very cool and incredibly readable. All thinky about plots and characters lately, as I get at this stage of writing something. I'm about halfway through with a draft of the second novel and have an idea of what it wants to be, namely, YA horror which deals with the notion of "what if the world ends and you don't save it, you just get lucky, survive, and can only try to undo the damage in your little corner of the world?" And also it's a road-trip story. So basically I'm now getting my hands dirty with the plotting business.

And I'm about to go make a delicious sandwich.

In short: A+!

Also, have my results for that VisualDNA thing. Pretty accurate, actually

<lj-embed id="1" />
Read my VisualDNA™ Get your own VisualDNA™

Pretty accurate, actually, as these things go.

Sandwich time, seriously.

"No, you shut up, sir."

Wow, so I totally didn't notice that comments were disabled on the poll entry. That's some EPIC FAIL right thar. They've been reactivated, so if you had thoughts, go for it. I thought the discussion seemed a bit quiet.

In other news, it's only been up for about half an hour or so, but the poll is already yielding some interesting results! This got started, by the way, after I was thinking about that Mary Sue meme that's going 'round, where you write 100 or so words about a Mary Sue in your fandom of choice. And I realized that I have spent far too much time thinking about this. Basically, in every fandom, she's roughly the same, and even has one of two jobs (cop or museum conservator), but the problem is that I've put a lot of thought into this, and where in the world my MS would fit, etc.

Given a convo I had with roz_mcclure last week1, for instance, it seems obvious that she'd be a Slayer in the Buffyverse, but the thing is that in Buffyverse, Buffy is basically my Mary Sue, and an original character there would be less whiny and angsty, probably, but she would also mostly just be Random Slayer #3 who meanders around in the background, because honestly I wouldn't like to hang out with any of the Buffyverse characters all that much.

Additionally, I've been focusing a lot on the latest original project, and doing that always gets me thinking about my preferences as a reader and how they influence my fannish choices/activities/involvement. So between the two, the Mary Sue thinky thoughts and the original fic thinky thoughts, I thought a poll might be fun.

Given how crap I am at meta, we'll see whether anything comes of the results, but, you know. Still interesting.

1It was, as I remember it -- I was rather drunk at the time -- thus:

Me: Okay, so, in this story, Stella is a Slayer after "Chosen", and she and Giles --
Roz: Is everyone a Slayer in your world?
Me: No! Well, not everyone. Well, yes.

I was thinking about my fannish ins yesterday, and thought I'd throw a few questions out there. Possibly I will actually do some srs bzns analysis of the data later, we'll see.

View Poll: The In

Note: I should add that setting would, for my purposes (because even after editing this poll multiple times I still thought up changes after I posted it), fall under the "other thematic elements".

ETA: Ha, so I totally didn't notice that comments were disabled. That's what we call EPIC FAIL right thar. They're open now.

I'm stealing fox1013's take on the Mary Sue meme. In fact, I'm stealing her exact wording, because I am sneaky like that. I want to do the Mary Sue meme, but I don't know what fandom I'd put myself in or why. Still, since I've seen a few other people do this: if any of you want to mary sue me into a ficlet, go right ahead. I'll just be here.

In other news, my Mom and I have been talking, and I now have a fallback plan for after graduation. Basically I had a minor existential crisis and went off for detailed career assessments &c. And as usual, one of the top results was law enforcement -- seriously, for years now, this has come up in whatever career profile test I take; it's interesting because Mom says I should be a nurse and traditionally there are a lot of similarities and the two, cops and nurses, get along very well. I always get super-high Investigative/Realistic scores, which is probably part of it.

So now it's the backup plan, just in case. Which is very reassuring to me, because I always need to have a backup plan. \o/

And apparently my great-uncle Bobby was a Portland cop. I didn't even know I had a great-uncle Bobby, so there you go.
