I am appalled by the lack of zombiefic, people. It's not going to write itself!

In other news, oh Supernatural. I want to like you, I really do. It'd be nice to be involved in an active fandom, and most of my flist is there anyway. And you seem like you'd be right up my 'pretty people smashing stuff and making wisecracks' alley, except for the no female regulars thing. And yet, somehow, nothing. SIGH.

So many people I know love it that I figure I must be missing something, but I've only been able to make it through one episode, and like five others I've been lucky if I've made it halfway before I get too unspeakably bored and have to do something else. I really do want to like it, but I keep thinking I must be missing something.

I haven't been able to find the CKR one anywhere, which is TRAGIC!

But, yes. Ditto to the "meh".

I'm away from my computer right now, but if you remind me on Monday or Tuesday I will get it to you. It's not really the best episode. In fact, it's probably why it took me until the middle of the second season to love it.

I need a Leoben icon.

but I keep thinking I must be missing something.

Not necessarily - each to her own, right? I tried to watch Veronica Mars and was just... well, I'd rather lie on the couch and count cracks in the ceiling, honestly. I just don't get it.

The thing that has me hooked on Supernatural - apart from the smart writing, the humor, the stories themselves, the fabulous performances by the two leads, the gritty Americana look and feel of the thing, the color grading, the excellent weapons, the '67 Impala, the way everything ties together, the character development, the fact that actions have consequences and the writers don't shy away from them, and the pretty - is the loyalty and that fiercely protective familial love.

Eric Kripke, the creator, wrote "It's always been a show about family, much more than it is about anything else. The mythology is only an engine to raise issues about family. A big brother watching out for a little brother, wondering if you have to kill the person you love most, family loyalty versus the greater good, family obligation versus personal happiness...."

But I think my pal Erin put it better: "staggering loyalties and terrible perils and weird family dynamics... everything for each other, even unto death."

It's what hooked me into Lord Of The Rings - the relationship between Boromir and Faramir, the fraught dynamic with their dad, and how the return of the King would change everything for them.

For me, SPN is even better than Buffy, which is saying a huge amount. I still think Buffy was a brilliant show, but Supernatural has a laser focus that keeps me absolutely riveted in a way that even Buffy didn't. It's not a big ensemble cast, it doesn't follow the stories of lots of people, or try to wrap you up in the lives of anyone except the Winchesters, and specifically, the Winchester brothers.

I will say that during the first season, I watched a bit of an episode here and there and wasn't grabbed either. What hooked me was about the last 10 or 15 minutes of the Season 1 season finale, which I happened across, and was abolutely blown away by. Just. It still affects me, every time I watch it, because it's a concentrated dose of what I mentioned above - the staggering loyalties, the terrible perils, the weird family dynamics, and everything for each other, even unto death.

Oofah.

So yeah, if that isn't your thing, you won't dig Supernatural.

I know where you're coming from. For me, it's about hot-and-cold episodes. I haven't watched too many, but it seems like some are intriguing and spooky with good characterization, while others (like, oh, first half of finale?) are silly and YA-book-formulaic and completely deny me any suspension of disbelief.

Just a quality control problem, IMO. :)

With three other challenge prompts due, I pledge a raincheck on the zombie!fic, and will come back to it in later days. Death ain't goin' nowhere, right?

Word and snaps for the Supernatural 'meh'. It's too formulaic for me, mostly -- which says something, I guess, as I avidly watch House. Probably my sibling issues play into it, too; not being close to my sister makes it hard for me to accept any familial closeness anywhere, and with craptacular dialogue and incest as fandom's main offer, there's not much it offers me. YMMV, I guess.

(Plus, I don't find either brother attractive. Heresy and damnation, yeah, yeah.)

uh, see, i wanted to write zombiefic, but my phobia acted up and my fingers shook on the keyboard and i cried a little bit. so when it goes away, i'll probably write it.

seriously, i can't read the zombie survival guide without closing it and going for a brisk walk around the block to calm myself. it's pretty lame.
